This feature shows variables that never get assigned a value in a special highlight color that of course can be set to anything you like:

This feature lets you see the Contents field with invisibles (spaces, tabs, returns, etc.) displayed in red. If you click in the Contents field, the invisibles go away so you can edit the text.

If you hold down the Option key when moving the mouse over the Values field, you will see the Variable Examiner:

If you hold down the Option key when moving the mouse over the Contents field, you will see the Character Examiner; this works regardless of whether Show Invisibles is on:
